Default Alert proposed for parents with failing children

Yeah, in principle, this sounds like a no-brainer, and great idea, but for districts where a lot of students are failing and most parents really don't seem to care, this could be a nightmare for the teachers.

Alert proposed for parents of failing students. This article was in the Detroit news: The story

Mark Hornbeck / Detroit News Lansing Bureau

LANSING -- Parents whose kids are underperforming in school would get a mandatory phone call or e-mail from the teacher, under a bill backed by Gov. Jennifer Granholm and to be introduced this week.

The measure, which would be in place by the start of the new school year this September, is aimed at getting parents involved before the student bring homes a low or failing report card grade.

"If I had a child is struggling in class, I would want to be notified," said Granholm, a mother of three. "This empowers parents to make sure their children are successful."

Michigan would be the first state to require direct contact. Florida and Texas mandate written communication, said Sue Carnell, Granholm's education adviser.

Bill sponsor Rep. Kathy Angerer, D-Dundee, said it'll be up to local districts and teachers to decide when students are struggling and when parents need to be notified. The legislation prescribes no penalty for those who don't comply.

Angerer said many districts already require such communication. But some districts do not, and some teachers aren't following through on the policy, she said.

"I want the entire state of Michigan to be doing this," said Angerer, a former school district communications director. "Parent involvement is critical to a student's success."

Our daughter teaches math in Taylor, and she has numerous students who are failing her classes at any given day. She tries to call the parents now and notify them, but most of the time, she cannot get through and the parents don't give a rip anyway.

So, what would this mean, each time a student fails a test you have to call the parents and remind them to be a good parent and care about their child's education?
Let's see 5 classes, 32 students each. Yeah, a teacher is going to be able to make all those phone calls...

Jenny is out of her mind if she thinks this will be helpful. A parent that cares about their child will know how well they are doing in school, to make this a mandate is crazy. To Jennifer Granholm>>>>> :miff:

thats my take, as well.

If you kids are failing, you probably know it. If you don't care enough to know, you probably don't care enough to act on the email(other than beat your kid).

My wife goes through this all the time.

This year (teaching third grade) 2 kids who could barely read their own name, let alone write it, can't add 1+1 etc, lots of conferences, phone calls, letters to the parents. It does NOTHING!!

If the parents are involved in their child's life, they know how they are doing in school, if they don't know, a phone call from their teacher will not change that.

Okay great idea leaders of Michigan...lets make a manditory rule, that is up to the discretion of those it is to be applied to, and is also optional.

Any teacher who has a failing student and doesn't notify the parents, to the best of the teacher's ability, is probably not a good teacher. This is a law motivated by politics.

<sarcasm> No such thing as a bad parent, just failing schools. </sarcasm> :miff:
