Default exhaust choices!

I've got a 98 5.2L Ram 4x4 and it's in dire need of a muffler. I currently has no cat, just straight from manifold to muffler. The muffler is completely shot and rusted out. I would like to possibly improve my mileage without making it louder. I'm either looking at a stock replacement muffler or a Flowmaster 40 series for it. If I do the flowmaster is it going to matter what size in/out pipes I go with? Give me some insight to whether it's worth the extra $$ for an aftermarket muffler or save $$ and go with the OEM muffler replacement. I don't want it too loud as I like the windows down in the summer. Thanks!

i would go with the flowmaster as it will give better flow therefore better mileage. it may not be much of an improvment but it could be up to .5-1 mpg over stock. when i took of my stock exhaust and put flowmaster duals on i picked up about 1.5 mpg but that was with duals. with a single you'll prolly be about 1 mpg i would guess. if you dont want it to loud either go with like a 50 series. it will be a little quiter then 40 series but still flow good. i would go any quiter then 50 series though. as per size i would stay stock or maybe 2.5" i believe 2 or 2.25 is stock.

i have a 2001 dodge ram with a flowmaster 40 i noticed better mileage as long as you stay off the gas when you get on it it will actually use more, but you exhaust is 2 1-2 inlet diameter the 40 sounds good but like you said you dont want it to loud the flowmaster 50 is a choice for you then but the 40 still really isnt that loud, and a OEM muffler for your truck probably cost more than a flowmaster in all reality I really recomend a flomaster you will deff be satisfied

Thanks for the feedback guys! I'm getting the exhaust done on Thursday, so I've got some time to throw ideas around. The main reason I don't want it that loud is for when it's warmer out I like to put the windows down. It can be annoying when all you hear is the exhaust.

I have tried many mufflers on my dodge and by far the flowmaster sounds and performs the best in my opinion. Delta flow 40 series would be good or 50 series but the true 40 series might be to loud for you. I like loud so I go with super 44's. Good luck.

I ended up going with the 40 series. It sounds great, and it will still rumble even after I add the catalyic converter back on in the summer. Thanks all!
