i believe the 85 would be a 7.5, any ranger with a 4.0 ford had an 8.8

The ranger 8.8 isn't really any stronger than the 7.7 as they share the same 29 spline shafts, larger ring gear though.

I run a Ranger 8.8 in my 302 powered Ranger and no problems, the larger ring gear is a good idea. 28 spline. I wouldn't put money into the 7.5.

I wouldn't put money in a 28 spline 8.8

to each their own

I have had 28 spline 8.8 shafts next to 31 spline shafts and the difference is way noticable as well as the axle tubes and the outer bearings in the housings as well.

get Explorer 8.8 if your going to spend all that money on a locker and you will never have problems. Ive had great results with added shim to the factory limited slip, this truck sees more street cuz its a DD.
