not to sound like im fighting against him i do personally find this ticket thing stupid. but on newer cars they have things that are called crumple zones. these zones are safety voids built into the car for well safety in an accident. the only good the stronger bumper would do is a small fender bender. if your got into and accident and the crumple zones didnt get to crumple b/c of the bumber then the whole point of having safety was just eliminated by a stronger bumper. im not a body shop person so maybe someone could clear this up and heck i could be completely off key here.

good luck in court hope the best for ya

Request an informal hearing......that way you and the officer can have a discussion one on one with the Magistrate or Court Administrator. My husband was pulled over for bumper Height on one of my cherokees.also the Car quest guy in town also got a ticket......It was recommended that we put a drop hitch in the rear receiver that took care of the problem ! Go figure ..no more problems after that !
* Note: My 1st husband was a Distric Court Magistrate and I will post some of the codes that apply

Heavy duty replacement bumpers are not illegal, actually they are specifically allowed by MCL. There's a ton of mis-information in this thread.

257.710c(5)s4

Edit:

257.710c(5)s4 This section does not prohibit the installation of heavy duty equipment including bumpers, shock absorbers, and overload springs within the limitations of this section, or the removal of a bumper when necessary to install a snowplow, lift ramp, or similar device while the device is in place and operational.

People need to actually take the time to read the entire law and contact a Technical Services Advisor if they have further questions regarding the wording.

I had actually already read this subsection.

Sorry for the lack of updates on the ticket and rear bumper pictures - I have been busy, but will surely be able to post them tonight.

look closer. it's got a bunch of little cutouts in there, specific bends, etc.

Think of a beer can. Drink, then try and stand on it. If you're careful, you probably can. Now lean a little left or right or tap the side and see it crumple. The notches and bends allow the TJ frame to crumple, just add large loads.
