I dont know how they can get away with stuff like that

At least Michigan does something right

Michigan requires that a child held in seclusion have constant supervision from an instructor trained specifically in special education, and that confinement not exceed 15 minutes.

unreal. If a parent did that, the children would be taken away.

WTF is wrong with you people, I put no blame on the school. If a kid is a punkass and needs to be put in a room for punishment, there is no reason the school shouldn't be able to it. The kid was already messed up in the head if he hung himself over being put in timeout. I was locked in a room when I misbehaved, and there is nothing wrong with that. I am so sick of hearing about how schools can't punish kids, just makes a bunch of kids that never have to have any repercussions for their actions.

I agree, to an extent, that we are mollifying our kids and the schools' hands are tied when it comes to disciplining kids, but there is always a point where it goes too far, and this is one of those cases.

The article does not say the kid who hung himself was in the basement. The basement "chill" room was in Rhode Island.

I agree, with schools can't punish kids enough. But the school obviously knew about the issues with this kid. He's obviously had lots of past issues, and if the parents aren't lying (which a lot of times parents are just as fucked up as their kid) about not knowing about this, I can see some blame pointed at the school. I however point the blame at both the parents and the school.

The term "Special Education" is used to much these days. I remember when it was directed towards students with sever disabilities. It is now used to describe any kid with LD/ADD/ADHD, which turns into a LOT of kids in the school. Sounds like this was your typical kid, with some depression, who got into a lot of trouble at school, and I would venture to guess they were running out of options with him.
