A good rule of thumb is that if it has sat in the woods for 24 hrs w/o being cleaned, it's no good.

Thats more along what I had always thought. I had a buddy shoot one here about two weeks back that ran west from my place. he said he would look for it in the morning rather then push it into the swamp on the other side of the 20 acre tree farm on my west side. he came back to find a gut pile from whoever got their first.

Yes it is illegal to take into possession any deer you did not shoot yourself.
Funny, how are they going to know I didn't shoot the one I tagged this year.

neighbor( elderly lady) saw deer come on her land and die in front of her living room. she called my family and asked if anyone we knew hunted and wanted deer.

they people who got it were tracking and could be seen in the woods with flashlights.
Lady said she did not want the hunters on her land. so my uncle took it home and butchered it.

sucks to be the hunters and we would have let the hunters have it. but old lady was adimant abotu them not getting it.

first of if it was in your neibors yard for a day or 2 it would be fine just clean it and and discard all the meat that is in contact with the ponch

it was cold enought that bacteria wouldn't grow and it should have froze with in a day of death

it is comon place for people to gut shoot a deer and leave it for 12-18 hrs before even looking for it, and in fact its a bad idea to even take up a trail and a wounded deer before 12 hrs if gut shoot so that 12 hr rule in the winter time is a crock of crap, if it was warm i would say No but as cold as it was fine cut it open and all the good burandy meat would be just fine to eat.... as even if you guted the dear you hang it for a few days before butchering it
