Red Wings' Fischer suffers seizure during game
ESPN.com news services

DETROIT -- Red Wings defenseman Jiri Fischer had a seizure on the Detroit bench late in the first period of Monday night's game against the Nashville Predators and was listed in stable condition at a hospital.

Fischer was given CPR at the bench and a defibrillator was used before the 25-year-old native of the Czech Republic was removed on a stretcher. The game was called off with no makeup date immediately announced.

Team spokesman John Hahn said Fischer was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital and was stable, breathing on his own and responsive.

"It looks like he's going to be OK," Hahn said.

"You see a guy laying there, doctors doing what they're doing ... you're fearing for the guy's life at that moment," Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman told Fox Sports Net Detroit. "Fortunately there were several people there that knew what they were doing."

Play was stopped with 7:30 left in the period after the Red Wings alerted officials to a problem on the bench. Medical personnel worked on the 25-year-old Fischer for several minutes and he was wheeled back toward the Red Wings dressing room.

An ambulance arrived at Joe Louis Arena and Yzerman and Kris Draper skated a stretcher across the ice to where the player was being treated.

Two Red Wings players also helped escort Fischer's fiancee across the ice to the bench area.

"I heard some guys yelling ... I stood up and saw Fisch there," Brendan Shanahan told the television station. "I jumped on the ice ... you can tell when it's urgent. We were screaming for the referees to blow the whistle, but they were confused, the Predators were confused -- no one was expecting that. Obviously, it's not something to expect to see when you're out performing on the ice like that. Thank goodness our doctors were near by."

The decision was made to resurface the ice then, and the remaining time was to be added to the second period. But the game was postponed instead.

Fischer was diagnosed with a heart abnormality in September 2002, causing him to miss two days of practice. The problem was found on an electrocardiogram as part of a routine battery of tests during the Red Wings' preseason physicals. When the result was abnormal, Fischer was given a stress test that he passed.

"There is a little abnormality, but nothing that will stop me from playing," Fischer said at the time. "It's nothing that will bother me emotionally."

He said that his heart essentially is a little thicker than normal.

"I wasn't scared about the abnormality," Fischer said. "But I was scared about not playing hockey again. That was a shock for me."

I was at the game with my son. With 7:31 in the first they ice cleared and one (can't remember which) of the wings went to the zamboni doors twice to try and get a medic to the bench. The reports in the stands, and also over the PA was that Jiri Fischer was hit in the neck with a puck and required CPR before being transferred by an ambulance (they pulled it onto the ice) to the hospital. After about an hour in the stands with no game they came on the PA to tell us he was stable and talking and that the game was rescheduled. Traffic in the structure was a nightmare.

"Parker and the Man" on the way home said that he was hit in the neck with a stick (not a puck) and went into seizures. So I'm got one story from the Joe and another from the radio. I do know that his heart stopped though and he required CPR. Who knows what really happened. I was seated on the bench side so I didn't see it happen.

he didn't get hit with a puck, unless it was minutes before he went into seizures. FSD kept replaying about 2 minutes prior to the "event" and the play wasn't really even near him. Most likely he had some sort of cardiac arrest, stopped breathing, and then went into seizures.
