Default Cell Phone/ School and Who's business ?

OK The past few weeks there has been cell phone scandals at High schools.. The one today at Okemos School

Why?? Is it anything to do with the school if a girl sends a guy a naked picture of herself and he forwards it to his buddys?

It seems that its a big issue at school theses days.......

My question is.......
Is it any business of the schools? I don't think so..... Its a personal cell phone.....maybe if it was a picture of a teacher it would be an issue..
So far no legal charges have been filed at any of the schools ,.But they are continuing their investigations. WTF

I can see that it would cause some disruptive focus..because its students,
Many schools already ban them during school hours..

Your thoughts?..

Well they used to be when I was there. They laxed and have allowed them between classes in many cases considering it was something they couldn't police. They ARE going to be there, so they modified the rules to make them more realistic.

Now elementary schools...no way in the world they should allow them. If parents are that uptight...

Why it's there business...they basically taught us that school is one place that many of your "rights" don't exists as protection for all.

Because parents expect schools to do the parenting. If the school did nothing there would be many upset parents.

Cell phones should be banned at schools and anything that happens with cell phones like nekkid pics should be dealt with by the parents.

They should be banned from schools period.

When caught, the teacher should destroy it in front of everyone in the class as a warning to other kids.

This method would be fun:

Usage should be banned at schools, not the actual possession of a cell phone. Many parents are giving them to their children at a younger age for emergency purposes, and so they can always contact their child (keeping track of your kids IS good parenting).

The story I heard was of a girl who was 15 sending her picture to someone who sent it to two friends, they sent it to two friends and so on and so on.

Child Porn is illegal. Having it on your phone is illegal.

A third grader does not need a cell phone. That is the youngest I have confiscated a phone from, as the student was calling mom during lunch, to "check in".

WTF!?!?!?!?!??!?!

my GF is a high school teacher, she told me that you are allowed to have a cell phone, but it MUST be turned off during class...if you get caught on the phone or texting or whatever DURING class then you phone will be confiscated, but if its between classes thats ok...they used to not allow them at all, but ever since all of the school shootings and all that, they now allow them as a "safty feature"

my opinion about dealing with the pics: the students are the responsibilty of the staff while the kids are on the property. i think they have every right to deal with it, for the exact same reason they will deal with you if they catch you out back smoking. if they didn't react to things that the kids did, they there is no telling what they would do.

Well for one I'm sure that the girl didn't take the pic at school, so she probably sent it right after she took it (when she was at home) so if the school found out that she sent it they should not be able to do anything because it was taken and sent at home. If it was forwarded at school the student should simply get in trouble for texting during class. I know at my school the rule is the phone must be in your locker and turned off until the final bell rings. They are now enforcing that becasue a couple weeks ago a student made a threat that he was going to come to school with a gun and shoot up the place, so a kid sent a text around saying don't come to school on friday if you love your friends. pass it on. 3 kids got suspended for 180 days for forwarding it. They did not even start the text.

Should kids be able to have a phone at school? Yes, for emergency purposes and to be able to arrange transportation after school.

Should they be allowed to use it during school hours for general purpose? No, not under any conditions but emergency.

Should the school be involved in what's on the phone? If the top 2 rules are followed, it's none of their business.

ya its none of their damn business, sure i can respect them not wanting to use cell phones during class, but what you do with them is none of their business, if some girl sends naked pics of herself to somebody and it gets out, its the damn sluts fault, and usually it would be the guy gettin into trouble by the school, its none of their business

Have you ever seen the bottom drawer of a high school principals desk? There is always good shit in there. iPods, cell phones, when pagers where the in thing those...

If you think its not the school business what goes on with cellphones in the school, you are fricken clueless.

We have a total ban on phones in my school. All the texting and crap just disrupts the flow of the class.

One thing that seems to get glossed over by some of you is that porn is still porn....kid porn is even worse. It's not allowed.

Another thing the kids are doing is taking them into the bathrooms and taking pics under the stall and then sending them around. Same thing with locker rooms.

Another issue we ran into is the propagation of alerts to a fight. A small fight that a teacher could break up turns into a huge mess that isn't safe for anyone. Last year there was a huge one that ended with a girl having brain damage. There were 3 teachers there, but could not get to the center to break it up.

I grew up in an era of no cell phones...my parents could get hold of me, and I them, very easy. Just call the office, or go to the office. Arranging transportation is a lame excuse.

you guys are missing a big point. paul is the only one who has mentioned anything. the girl is in high school, odds are that she is not 18, thus child pornography

you can be 80 years old, retired for 30 years, havent left your house in months, and if for some reason, someone catches wind that you are in possession of it, your are gonna face consequences, no ifs ands or buts about it. what makes these kids different?

Your thoughts?..
Were the two of Legal age? If one was a Minor and the other....Then it's big trouble. I think it's Completely the school's buisness. I"m pretty sure most schools have a No nudity policy. I guess a Good question to ask is, "would it be a problem if an 18 year old Student looked up porn and was watching it on his Cell phone?" This is no different. If they don't want to get in trouble, they should wait till after school. Also, if a Student underage sees that it's technically breaking the law. There is a ton of different reasons for the school to get involved and I say it's their place. I don't get why you think it's a bad thing that the schools are getting involved. I would be upset if they didn't. If you're stupid enough to be doing that stuff in school, You deserve to be Punished.

BTW, I'm a OPS Bus driver and never heard anything about it. I didn't watch the news though. Okemos is particularly PC about everything. I'm not sure what their Cell phone policy is, but I know all the kids on my bus have them. Even the Middle schools. Which I think is retarded. They don't need them and it's just one more way for them to get distracted. I'm just glad I haven't seen any of the Elem. Kids with one.

I understand the issues that Muddypaws has spelled out from a teacher's perspective. The alerts about a fight are scarey. Maybe the only way to control it is a zero tolerance ban. But I also don't think we can rewind the clock to say "when I was in school........". Back then, I called my parents from a pay phone to say I was done with practice. Do pay phones even exist any more? I don't know.

Don't misconstrue my opinion that what's on the cell phone being none of the school's business with my approval of porn. Illegal porn is illegal porn. But I don't it is the school system's responsibility or right to police it. If it becomes known, it's another thing. But expelling a student for something that happened outside of school is a grey area with me. Leave it up to the authorities.

I don't understand why a zero tolerance of USAGE could not be enforced. If a kid turns it on or even takes it out of a packsack during school hours, confiscate it. Period. Make the parents have to sign to get it back.

We have a 3 strikes rule. First we take it and the kid gets it back at the end of the day. Second the parent has to come and get it. Third we hold it for the rest of the school year.

Before someone says "that will never fly" it has been challenged in court 7 times...5 last year and 2 so far this year. In all cases the parents lost.

And I think we still can roll back the clocks and say when I was in school. The phones aren't banned after school during practice. They are banned during school hours and on the school property. We have lots of phones in the school. There is no need for a cell phone.

Fine lines here....lots of good points !.....Just from what I have heard on the Public news cast.None of the pictures were taken at school or during school hours.....One incident was about photos taken this summer and they finally got circulated this semester......I agree that cells phones are a big issue these days.......But I would'nt be without one now ! But then again Godforbit that I take neckid pictures of myself and past them around ! YIKES !
I guess childporn is child porn no matter if it's a 3 year old or a 16 year old..... I just don't see why It's the schools responsibility to become involved !

If a member of the staff at a school becomes aware of it, it becomes their responsibility. Somehow, I doubt they went around confiscating cell phones, then looking through all the pictures. More likely, they heard through someone whose friend told them so-and-so had the pictures on their phone. At that point, the teachers are obligated to check, because CP is CP is CP, regardless of whether the pics were taken on campus, or not.
