just a little heads up, make sure you gear this thing properly to handle your 40in tires and the fact that you have a 2600 rpm motor. what are you runing for tranny and tcase? which pump does your 4bt have on it?

Dropping a DEUCE...

Interesting project...
Funny, last night I was headed to costco, and sat next to a Blue YJ on (maybe) 33s, on M-24. Noticed it sounded kinda odd, then I saw it had Cummins badging on the side. On closer look, I saw 3" exhaust, a big dropped crossmember. Sure didn't sound like a 5.9, guessing it was a 4BT from the sound. |

great project! i would leave the 60 just as it is. you can always swap in a 14B, D-60, or sterling 10.25 later. what front axle are you going to use? i wouldnt shy away from a set of superduty axles either. if the price is fair, i would probably pick them up. keep in mind that their value is significantly less if the front is a D50. if you want to run 40's, or even 38's i would look in the 4.10-4.56 gear range. if those super duty axles have 4.10's in them, i would run them as is. i have also found that 20's are pretty common and affordable for the ford 8 on 170mm bolt pattern.
i would look into what it takes to use a ford ZF five speed. i forget what all is needed to adapt them, i think its just a bellhousing adapter, but im probably wrong. i think overall, (bellhousing/trans/adapter) the ZF is shorter than the nv4500. the ZF will also accept any ford transfer case. this means that you could use a borg warner 1345, 1356, np208 or np205. all of these can be had in a fixed yoke flavor in factory form. they are also fairly short overall. in your application, i would probably look for a ZF and use a 208 or 1356 case. you want to do anything you can to get the engine as far back in the chassis, but still keep your rear driveshaft a reasonable lenth. some will tell you that the nv4500 is a stronger trans, but you really dont need rediculous strenth. your 4bt will probably end up in the power range of a stock full size diesel truck. the ZF can be found much cheaper than most nv4500's. since you would be looking for a nv4500 with the cummins bellhousing, t-case adapter, clutch assy, and all the goodies, you are going to spend an easy 1200-1800. a ZF can usually be found for a couple hundred, and have the bellhousing and adapter all cast in as one, so you wont be chasing down those parts. pretty much any ford t-case can be had for $200. you would have money left over to use for the adapter and a new clutch. here is a quick comparison of the top of my head, these figures are rough, but im usually fairly accurate, as i deal with this stuff fairly often. nv-4500 major parts ~$1500 used transmission, cummins bellhousing, t-case adapter, clutch fork ~$100-250 hydraulics (master/slave/lines, all replaced as one unit) depending on used or new ~250-600 used NP241, 29 spline ~350 new 241 slip yoke eliminator $2200-$2700 ZF-5 ~150-800 used transmission, including bell/adapter/clutchfork ~50-150 used or new hydraulics ~150 used np208 or BG1356 ~300-800 used or new conversion parts $650-$1900 |

Hey Guys sorry basketball, Jadas (hardware that i work at) and school are taking up most of my life, we are 7-2. I did make some progress. My engine is so rusty i would take me a year just to get all the rust off it so I am going to get it hot dipped ( i need to know of a good location. I am still undecided my self of what trannmison to use. The problem with the zf5 is that the adapters are hard to find and if you but them from a company like destroked the 700-900 dollars. Isnt the zf longer? they are a lot cheaper and i can us a ford np205 because i want to us a ford dana 60 or 44 up front. Fuck michigan and salt jk i love this state.
Heres some pics of the engine its actualy in almost perfect shape other than the fact that its rusty you can still see the hone on the engine. ![]() ![]() IMG]http://pic60.picturetrail.com/VOL1704/10584217/21073978/345172455.jpg[/IMG] ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I am going to have to join tdr to see that build up looks pretty sweet |
