Default Towing Safely?

If I put an XJ and a YJ on a gooseneck trailer, can I safely tow it with an F-250 light duty 4x4? The light duty means it has bastard wheels (7 lug) LD springs, and a wonderful 5.4.

If not, would an 08 Super duty 5.4 crew cab be better?

It all comes down to GVWR and GCWR. If you are over the limits and get stopped, bad news.

i wouldnt do it..

The light duty 250's seems like nothing more than an F-150 to me..

the axles offer no major beef. the drivetrain is to weak to be considered a 2500..

the light duty 250 is the Ford version of the GM's 1500HD I.M.O

The super duty crew cab will handle that load MUCH easier.. the extra Wheelbase will have thanking god !

That's what I was thinking. And since it's a long trip, I know it would happen, so I better check it out. I figure the two jeeps weigh in at roughly 6000LBS (shooting high) and I'm guessing the trailer is around 3000LBS. But I'm not sure what the GVWR's are of the trucks and if they can handle it. Anyone have a guess?

So ruling out the F-250 LD, Would the 08's 5.4 have enough power? Did anything get changed or is it the same old 5.4? Cause we all know what those can do.

Your biggest issues is braking ability.. the engine will pull the load it will just take you longer to get up to speed

You should be able to get the GVWR numbers from the door tag.

With a 24-26' trailer, an XJ and a YJ, you will be near 14K. I would not even try to pull that with a gaser in would be miserable.

you should be fine with the superduty. i wouldnt use the light duty. being a gasser will suck compared to a diesel, but thats the case with almost every vehicle on earth.

i'd say you're shooting LOW, not high. both vehicles in STOCK form weigh 3000# plus.

My CJ7 fiberglassbody loaded with tools is 4650, so your shooting low

head over to your local elevator and get the thing weighed if your are in doubt

And the 5.4 will hate you and you hate it, especially if you encounter any incline on your journey. Like Brimy said, your around 14k

Just as Brimy said, with a gasser it is going to suck. But sometimes you have to do what you have to do. As long as you have a brake controller. No need to be in a hurry.

For the legality of it, check the weight rating of the trailer (I doubt that will be an issue), and the axle rating of the truck and rear tires. Then you need an idea of the pin weight of the trailer when loaded. That can be adjusted, if the trailer is long enough to move the vehicles a bit.

If you were to be pulled over, those would be the issues, not the GVWR and GCWR. Those two numbers would come into play if you were involved in an accident, and not by the cops, but by an insurance company and lawyers.
