Default Aftermarket XJ 4Dr Fender Flares

Need some help here.

I'm mounting 31x10.5R15 tires and will be using 1.5"-2" spacers for a total of 3.75"-3.25" of backspacing with the OE 15x7 rims. Hopefully lift will be 2"-2.5" as I'm trying to keep it low since the wife is short. Hence, I think this means I'll be trimming sheet metal. I'm okay with trimming but need input to know which flare will work with trimmed fenders. These things are blasted expensive so I only want to spend the cash once.

Anyone have experience with the BW Extend-a-Fender? The BW Pocket flare is too big for this tiny 31" tire. What about Rusty's flares?

Good advice & photos are welcome. Seeing what either of these look like on the 4Dr would help a lot. Most dealers do not stock them so you cannot see the flares before committing to purchasing them (BAD!).

Please note I'm working with a 1989 XJ and a 1997 XJ. I think BW only offers the Extend-a-Fender for the 1989 and not the 1997.

Thanks,

Rick

You could just remount the stock ones after trimming a little bit, or if not much offroading will be done, I wouldn't bother trimming at all because the only time much rubbing will happen is when your articulating.

True...back when I had 30's on my XJ when it was stock I had no problems at all though unless I was articulating. If so you can trim the inside of the fender flare itself though.

Unclebeaner,

Need more pics or the ability to see your XJ in person to know how the BW pocket flares really look. My current opinion is they are too large. However, I do agree they can look fine with the right wheel and tire combination. My wife's '97 is the same color.

Yes, sheet metal needs to be trimmed even for 31's when you turn and flex the suspension. The next set of tires will be 32's so I need to think ahead. I may go to 33'3 but this would also require a new gear set; I have 4.10's now.

I would like to see the Rusty's flares before committing to purchase anything. Some folks have done some creative work to retain the OE flares with larger wheels on NAXJA. 53guy is one example and he had an excellent write-up. I have his pdf's and I'll use these as reference material to help me make my decision.

Thanks,

Rick
