I'm not sure why but it seems to me that most import buyers are more forgiving of problems with thier imports than they are with a domestic they owned 30 years ago that had a problem.
Bruce, you should know the two do not compare. JD Powers shows that. Toyota is still at the top of IQ. The domestics have made great strides, but EXPECT people to come back. Jamiesann said it best, they need to do something to make people WANT to come back. They need to out do Toyota, not just match them. GM has made awesome stride in quality (JD Powers) and productivity (Harbour Report). But they need to keep pushing and make their cars better, not just rebadge things and sell them in other divisions.

Never said anything was bad, just that the money generated from a sale doesn't end up supporting an american company.

Subaru revenue supports Fuji heavy industries and Toyota, Saab revenue supports GM.

All of the autoworkers in this thread that are adamant about buying U.S. made vehicles, are all of your everyday items that you use, made in the U.S.?

Why single out the autoworkers?

Either you try to buy american products (which are very hard to find) or you don't give a fukc and buy whatever is on sale.

Don't you have some republican hate-propaganda to go masturbate to?

Sure Toyota's tops overall, but not in every segment. You can't redesign every vehicle all at once. It took the big-3 many years to dig this hole, it will take many years to get out of it, but i think thier moving in the right direction, it's just a question of "is it too late?" I think one thing that the foriegn makers understand, and the domestics are just now figuring out, is that they don't need to be in every segment to be competitive, and it's better to just not offer a vehicle in a particular segment than it is to just put any old junk out on the market just to say "oh yeah, we have one of those".

I've seen the change. 15 years ago when I started in design if you suggested doing something different than they always did they told you "we sell 1,000,000 of these a year, why to anything different" Now, they seem to realize that "good enough" isn't good enough.

It will take time to change peoples perception, but it can be done. If in the mid 1970's you went up to the typical American and told them that in 30 years Japanesse cars will be concidered the best made in the world they'd of laughed at you and called you crazy.

Quiz: What's more "patriotic" to buy:

1) Mazda 6
2) Ford Fusion

Additional info:

1) Mazda assembled in UAW-represented Auto Alliance plant in Flat Rock MI.

2) Ford is assembled in non-union Ford plant in Mexico.

I'm a UAW worker and I agree it is hard to find everything you need on a daily basis that is made in the U.S.A. I also realize that it is important to try my best to find those products. When it comes to buying an "American Car" I think the car should be made here in the U.S.A. Just because it says Ford or GM on the badge doesn't mean squat! The big 3 has too many plants in other countries and I believe we shouldn't support those products. There isn't a car on this earth that is 100% American and that is a shame but it's reality. It doesn't matter what you do for a living, if you live in Michigan the auto industry is going to have some kind of an effect on you. If you don't TRY to buy from local shops or products from the U.S.A then don't bitch when you're unemployed because you did it to yourself and you're a complete Asshole!

Boy, this subject got some people riled up. the main problem I can see here is the union. for 75+ years the unions has kept growing and growing. there was a time and place for the union, but it has come and gone. you have thousands upon thousands of people going to automotive plants that get paid $25+/hr to actually work like 2 hrs out of an 8 hr day. and when the workers get laid off or time out of work they get 95% of their pay. someone has to pay for that, unfortunately it's the people that are buying cars.

we could learn alot from the foriegn work force, they are proud to have a job. not like the american attitude what's in it for me.

See that's where you have it wrong. The Union has gotten a bad name over the years but that has changed. Management and the Union have both realized that the old way of doing things were not cutting it anymore. That's why you hear about Harbor hours. That is the time it takes for a car to be finished from start to finish. At my plant the Industrial Eng. have added so many jobs to each person it isn't like it used to be. We are working 52 seconds out of each min. If you so much as drop a bolt or have to blow your nose you get behind. I understand how people want think that UAW workers have it made because it used to be where you only actually worked a few hours out of a day but we have had people get hired and quit the same day because they couldn't handle it. I bet that most of the people that complain about our jobs couldn't handle it for 2 hours let alone 10 or 12 hours seven days a week in the summertime without saying I was wrong! You guys and girls deserve every penny!

Oh and one more thing that I forgot, when we do get laid off we don't collect 95% of our pay. We collect the same Unemployment check as everyone else. A whopping $362 BEFORE TAXES and we get a S.U.B. check which varies depending on what you make. Mine is for $242 and if you add those together you will get $604 and remember that I still have to pay TAXES out of that. So when you figure $26.00 @ hour X 40 hours that's $1040 so how everyone seems to think we get 95% is still a mystery to me.
