i believe the 302 is on the same block as the 351, if not the same then similar, i could be wrong though.
why ditch the 4.9???

It will bolt up but you will need frame mounts as a V-8 is shorter than the I-6

Yes, 302 and 351w have the same bellhousing bolt pattern.

Honestly, The 5.0 Isnt Any Better Than The 4.9. I Wouldnt Waste The Time To Swap It. Unless The 5.0 Has Got Some Money Into It. But If I Was Gunna Do Another Swap, It Would Be To Put A Windsor In B/c The Longer Stroke Will Be A Huge Help Off Road.
Just My .02 Cuz I Just Swapped My Windsor Out For A 460...more Low End Power

I would leave the engine alone. Take the swap money and run on-board air up to a turret on the roof to power your paintball gun.

It wont sell good if you make the swap. You might have a hard time selling it if the numbers dont match.

Unless your I6 is majorly messed up, keep it in the truck. I was doing the swap myself by taking out the 6 and putting in a hotter cam 302. IT WAS THE BIGGEST PAIN IN MY ASS TO DO. Like the others said, you will need special frame mounts that attach behind the "k-member" because the I6 mounts will need to be removed to clear the oil filter.

If the pain in the ass route wont dismay you from doing it, lets look it from the power/torque stand point. The I6 has longer push rods and have higher torque numbers at lower RPM's versus a short rod fast spinning high horsepower V8. When you are offroad, you need torque. Torque is the true power of an engine. Horsepower is the speed to which the torque is applied in a given time frame.

Fuel efficiency is roughly "ROUGHLY" 4 to 5 mph better than a v8. Feeding less cylinders and having the grunt to move the vehicle with relative ease makes sense. This of course depends on your driving style.

The only reason I wanted to put the V8 in my 4x4 was the ability to upgrade the horsepower and use it as a sleeper. I have since scrapped the project and found a newer truck with an FI 4.9L and it did great off road just crawling over obsticles and running through mud holes.

This is my thoughts on the subject and everyone is welcome to their own. BTW if you really want to make huge numbers and are stuck with the 6, put a TURBO on it and double your numbers!
