Default what fluid for my zf 5spd

I have a 96 F250 with a powerstroke and a 5 spd trans. Synthetic mercon is what it calls for but a friend of mine says that isnt thick enough (heats up too fast). I want to know from someone who works one what they use? Thanks, David

Full synthetic Mercon - Part number XT-2-QSM. Maybe your friend is a GM guy, a lot of their manual transmissions use 5w30. Be prepared if you buy from a dealer it's $22.66 a quart!

The syn sucked in mined. The synchros didn't grab for shit and made shifting alot harder.

I ran the dyno mercron, or grabbed I think it was B&M's non syn tranny oil.

No he's a hardcore Ford man, I am just a little hesitant to experament with an expensive trans.

forgot to add, from AZ or other retailers it's only 3-4 bucks a qt for Castrol Mercron V which is syn. I have to run it in my T-bird, sucks when I do a yearly flush or loose a tranny line.
