Default ?'s for the Dune buggy/Sand rail guys

I've been looking into getting a Sand rail/ Dune buggy in trade for my truck. I Got a few questions.
1. Is it that hard to get insurance? I've heard both ways. I plan on using it on the road so I figured that would be good to have.
2. If it doesn't have a title is it as bad as I've heard to get it titled and registered? One of the ones I'm looking at is nice, but it has no Documentation with it.
3. I've seen the Form that has the requirements for street legal use, is there anything else that would be good to have? I think the form is Michigan form IR-54 or something like that.
4. Last one, For the street drivers. What kind of MPG are we looking at? Say a mild VW, 2 seater stock. I would assume pretty good because beatles get good Gas mileage.

I'm talking to the guy Selling This and he might be willing to trade. In essence I need you guys to school me in this kind of stuff. It's probably been beat to death, but I couldn't find anything. Soo0....I Started this thread. Thank you

I would have the current owner get it titled. He would need to get the paper work from the SOS Office. Then fill out the paper work. Then once it is approved it will be given a vin number by the state. Then it will be titled. It would fall under a custom build.

Then once it gets titled you can get it registered and plated. You will need to have insurance on it in order to register it.

I titled mine as a 68 bug. Just had a title laying around and used it. I know that isn't the right way to do it but the thing was titled and insured. More than once, I had cops come up to me and ask about it (mostly cause they thought it was cool) and they didn't give me any grief.

As far as MPG's, they're awsome. Mine was a 2.3 turbo and I guess that I got about 25-30 mpg when I would stay out of the boost.

Good luck man, Rails are a blast.

You wouldn't by chance have any more titles for a 68 bug would you? :tonka: Thanks for the advice guys.

My buddy and his dad were pulled over in their rails and threatened with confiscation and imprisonment for VIN swapping because it was no longer a bug but a custom build. Granted they probably got pulled over for being jackasses pulling wheelies or something (I honestly don't know, but it's something they would do) But it is a possibility.

An assembled title should be easy enough.

Yeah, it's really not all that hard. You just need to make sure you have ALL the legal equipment (mine didn't have a horn or front brakes among other things) You will also need proof that you bought all the parts.
