Default U.P. sight seeing suggestions

Erin and I are going for a week long trip to her grandfathers in the U.P. in August. I am trying to plan the route so we can see a lot of the sights up there.

I would like some suggestions.

Thanks.

P.S. Her grandfathers is on the far west side of the U.P. in Ontonogan/Mass City so we will be driving all the way across.

Running list of places we are going to go:

Mackinac City
Mackinac Island
Java Joe's in St. Ignace
Palms Brook State Park in Manistique
Escanaba for the Butterfly Migration
Pictured Rocks

Pictured Rocks by Munising for sure. If you're going to get up near Baraga, there is a great waterfall to check out on the Sturgeon River.

Stop in at Clydes first and get a big C burger in St. Ignace when you cross the bridge.

Visit the Pickle barrel museum in Grand Marais. Have a beer at the brewery (pizza is good too). Take the two tracks east and find Crisp Point lighthouse. See the pictured rocks. Take a glass bottom boat ride. See the greatlakes ship wreck museum. Check out Tahquamenon falls.

Thats just the NE side.

careful though staying ON mackinaw island. look into your hotel co$$t. unless you have a hard-on about staying there, yes it's NICE, but you're talking HIGH dollars.

my wife and i just stayed at the lakeview-inn there, thursday and friday night last week and paid $225(?)/night as a convention rate.

The Keweenaw is definitely a great place to see. I didn't mention it initially because it's WAY up there. Copper Harbor is a cool little town, and Brockway Mountain Drive is gorgeous.

I know about the price. I have been looking into some bed and breakfasts. Not all that bad.

Mackinac City
Mackinac Island

Just got back had lots of fun - the rain.
You really need to spend the night to appriciate everyting on the island.
I just stayed at the Chippawa they have a sweet bay side bar and a heated pool right on the bay.
I paid 262.20 for a 3 night stay. Make sure you ask about the buy 2 night get 1 free.

I went geocashing with a group there are 18 caches on the island so bring the GPS.

Grand Marais very nice, break wall , log slide , sand dunes, pictured rocks park starts there. 12 mile beach, Hurricane River, end up at Miner's Castle. I think there is more stuff on north side. Brockway Mt. very cool. Have fun. I grew up in Grand Marais.

Yeah. I kind of want to spend two nights on the island, but I don't know if we will get there in time for the last ferry or not. We might just stay in Mackinac City friday night and then go to the island saturday.
