Cost more then what it is worth doing. At least with a 6.0L even if you are getting a good deal on the engine.

You would still need the 5r100 trans, pcm, intercooler, and everything else to make it run.

I would do it with a cummins for 1/2 the cost of the 6.0L

yeah even though the 6.0l had its issues in the early days, I would rather have the 6.0l Too. Not to mention the torqshift trans is great.

I have 6.9L ZF 5spd and Tcase sitting in my barn, I kept everything out of a 89 F-250 to do a swap into my 79 crewcab. Never got time and ended up coming across a 97 F-350 crewcab PS, bought that instead and sold the 79(stupid me). Love my 97 but miss the 79. Any way I've got everything for a converison. I know it's not a PS, but it would make a good DD, guy next door has a 89 f-250 6.9 2wd and gets 25-27mpg.

we were gonna put a 12-valve cummins into my buddies truck. after doin alot of research it ended up being way too costly, if you've got the time and money go for it, but it might not be worth it

I personally would not bother with any of the Ford Diesels. The early 6.9-7.3 deals were really gutless. Like really gutless. The 7.3 and newer have a lot of electronics and whatnot to deal with and are finicky to get running right without all the sensors from the whole truck.
The ol' 12valve Cummins needs one wire and 2 fuel lines and will run forever. Hook up guages however you want . . .

Not to mention that the Cummins will make almost 4 times the horsepower as a 6.9 with all nearly free modifications.
