because of the design they engage when under load from one wheel spinning 100 Rpm faster then the other. this fast harsh engagement will chip the teeth on the spider gears and the locking mechanism. eventually they blow apart the locking mechanism or completely eat away the spider gear teeth.
hmmm interesting. ive got just about 200,000 miles on mine and had the cover off last fall and everythink look awesome in there.
i wonder if its just certain ones that fail.
