I have been doing the same recently. I am learning the mods as I go. Good source of information can be found here:

http://www.raptorforum.com/index.php

UncleBeaner is also a good source. Who I bought the Raptor from :)

raptors sit up too high for a sport quad. They haul ass but still..lower it and it will be just like a YFZ 450

I recommend the YFZ 450 over the raptor. With a couple mods the 450 will toast the 660 and the 700r.

I own a 700r. Its VERY top heavy. It is O-K for jumping but its really hard to get use to. You cannot blip the throttle before the jump at all, she is a rolling jumper. But the set back to that is the front will nose dive.

As far as trail riding, its alright. I liked my 400ex a little better on the trails over the raptor. But the raptor has the power. too much power actually for a beginner. It will pull the front wheels off the ground in 3rd gear STOCK. So keeping the front down will take some work.

1st is useless you CANNOT floor it in 1st. If your messing around with some friends racing. Make sure you practically sit on the gas tank when launching.

If you have any other questions let me know. I'm pretty knowledgeable when it comes to yami's.

i've ridden just about every sport quad from yamaha, honda, suzuki, and kawasaki. the raptor 660 is a badass quad but out of the box it does need some work. extremly fast in a straight line and can take jumps pretty good but you have to be careful how you launch it. they tend to get light sided pretty quick. the best engine mods for them are a simple K&N and exhaust, the engine produces lots of torque down low and good HP up high. the chassis takes a good amount of work to get right. they sit pretty high up and have a unusually high center of gravity. lower them and make it wider and it'll handle like it's on a rail. i used to ride with a few guys who all went out and bought new raports when they came out one guy left his stock for awhile where the other few guys raced so they modded the hell out of them. night and day diffrence between a modded one and a stocker.

DO NOT MOD A RAPTOR WITHOUT A POWERCOMMANDER. It will run lean and you will be ordering up a new motor rebuild in no time;)

ok? the post speaks for itself, if your not fuel injected power commander won't pertain to you. I'm sure they can finger that one out themselves;)

cant go wrong with a 400ex.

If you really wanna race get a Honda 250r, the mods are endless. Most production quads out there today arent even race ready, only a few.

If the carb's just need rebuilt I have a brand new rebuild kit for both carbs if you or someone else might be interested. I ordered 2, but each kit was enough for both carbs.... so there it sits.

They i wouldn't recommend you giving advice on modding a raptor? Its one of the main modifications for raptors, its a necessity!

you keep saying raptor like they are all the same. The question was asked about an '03, so to keep things on track please keep the FI stuff to yourself.

raptor 660's are good reliable atv's but stock they are topheavy and wheelie happy. they have a starter clutch issue which should have been fixed by now. i've had a few of them. and if the carbs are not (missing) just clean them. and if you buy used carbs buy stock. not "jetted" who knows what jets are in them. and every machine that is modified is going to run different. tune it yourself or have it done, they run fine stock. just get a wider rear axle. make sure you dont pay too much. i bought a turn key 2002 about 3 weeks ago for $1200 and it did'nt need anything, as long as your under $1800 including everything it needs to be complete your doing ok. i've been selling atv's for a living full time for 9 years. thats my .02
