Try handing a guy a framing square and tell him to lay out a set of stairs, or cut a set of hip rafters. Like that credit card commercial, the look on their face is priceless.
Give a guy a set of blueprints and watch the brain go into complete lock up when they go from Civil sheets to S drawings, not that they actually get either one.

sorry buddy but light and heavy are in relation to the 1/16 inch increments
These terms are used because the saw blade is 3/32 thick

Every year I have students that have never used a tape measure. By the end of the year they can all read a tape measure. I am always suprised to see 11th 12th grade students that never had to use a tap measure

I liked them.

It's a good thing we don't actually have to cook anymore... people would be screwed.

this where I get pissed. I worked on Chevy's for years. Gm made it clear the whole of the world was going metric. when I got over to Chrysler I had to take two steps back. the WHOLE shop uses sae tapes with decimal points on them. the trick here is all the specs for crash testing come in Metric and the engineering guys here convert back to suit the two or three guys on the floor who refuse to learn the metric system. when they retire the system still won't change because its so ingrained now its cheaper to keep up the way we're going. I am stuck in tape measure hell.

and just a little note, I read back a couple posts about how kids can't make change without the register, I got fired because I could add and do tax faster then the register. the company I worked for got complaints because I would punch the stuff in and people couldn't keep up so they thought I was ripping them off.

I about threw one of our laborers off the deck one day. I had him measure a 2x4 for me. He said it was six and four lines. WTF!!!!!! I went off on him, the stupid fucker had been working with us for almost 2 months. So i did the normal degrading speech at the top of my lungs. Then i cut a 2x4 at 1'. And proceeded to draw the incremental lines for 1". So it was basically a magnified 1" segment on 1' of wood. I held it up to him and asked if he could read it. He said yes. So i threw it off the deck, told him to go get it and hes not allowed back up untill he learns how to read it. By the end of the day, he miraculously learned how to read a tape.

I use tape measure, micrometers, dial calipers, knuckle measurement (1 inch)....

I freaked out my boss one time by measuring with my hand spread (Think "hang loose" hand sign)
3 spreads = 24" on my hand.....when he went back to get the tape and measured it, I was right on the mark.
Work in fabrication long enough you get a feel for measurements, I use the body part method for stuff like wire, sealtite conduit, cable.... stuff where approximate is good enough.
