Anyone else had problems w/ them?? Bought a foreclosed house today and they're turning the gas off because the person who owned it before the bank took it over didn't pay the last bill. So they shut it off. It now has a block on it. But somehow the bank got it turned back on so we could come look @ it. I had to show purchase statement, affidavit, and ID. Before they would even talk to me. Then they said well it takes 48 hours to go through. So the gas has been running from the beginning of Feb. up till now. There gonna shut it off till Monday at the earliest.
sounds like it wasnt' the the previous owner not paying. if the gas is on and the bank took it, the bank is responsible for utilities that are on during sale.
well if the bank would have had it worked out with you and dte they would have been able to leave it on and just have done a read for change for the date of the closing. you have to work it out ahead of time otherwise it will get shut off.
well you need to know the right people.... I could have set you up with people that would have been able to help you out... at least they have helped everybody here on the west side, i turn on peoples gas all the time when they havent even closed on the house yet they are just in the process of buying.

i hate dte with a passion! i got a new house this year (and by new i mean 175 years old) they were supposed to take a month to run gas to my house. well 3 months later in november i am nocking walls out of my house and installing a woodstove so i can have heat for the winter. screw dte!
I didn't have a problem w/ the water company and the electric company at all they plugged the new stuff in and i was good to go. All i want is the gas to be in my name and not get shut off!! I asked the lady for the address to DTE so i can send them the bill if the pipes freeze and break....she wasn't to happy about that!
It drives me nuts when people don't use punctuation in these threads they respond to but oh well i guess my two cents is that you need to call the bank and find out what they did to piss off DTE and then call DTE and see if they can fix the mistake if not then it will be cold!
I also don't care for DTE work, They said they had to move my meter inside the house, had to take the day off work, for they couldn't schedule time because of involvement of the job. That was about two years ago, now they are telling me they have to move it back outdoors with no explanation why, so i got to take another day off. Very poor customer relations.
Sounds like there was a theft issue with the previous owner or with the bank (or whoever the bank had looking at it). Utility theft - especially gas - is a huge issue.
If it's not cleared up, PM me on Monday. I know people.
When I bought my house, the day we closed escrow the banks agent called DTE and SEMCO and turned everthing off. It took a week to get everything on, pipes froze.
As a general rule of thumb, one issue you can expect to have with a foreclosed property are utility issues.
They defaulted on their mortgage, and very likely didn't pay for their utilities either. Many probably stole utility service.
When buying a foreclosed property, you should expect to have to prove who you are, to establish that [a] you're a good risk and that you're not the same people just trying to turn the service on with a different name.
We bought our house as a foreclosure in 2008 and we had no problems getting the utilities on because the bank had them on before we purchased. We did have a problem with the water where it got shut off because the bank didnt pay for the year that they had the property, but even with that we cut a check to the water company for the amount they owed and the bank's mortgage company cut us a check for the amount like two weeks later.
I think we didnt even pay utilities for our first month because the bank had already paid for them or something.
Just hung up after an 1.5 on hold and still didn't talk to anyone!! WOW!!
