This is a serious question. Does anyone know of a family oriented and reasonably priced sign language course near St. Clair or Macomb Counties?
The reason I ask is because my girlfriend is legally deaf. She wears hearing aids currently that allow her about 30% hearing on a good day. She has a degenerative condition that will most likely leave her completely deaf at some point in the future.
She is an excellent lip reader but that only goes so far. And she can only finger spell and do some basic sign, as she has only had this condition since she was 13, not birth.
Between us we have 6 kids ages 5-14 and in the last 6 months have become our own little brady bunch. We would like to start classes as a family so we can learn this valuable communication tool. Online searches have proven useless, as most courses are adult only. This is something we would like to do together.
Flint has a school for the deaf. I'd call them and ask.
One of my old friends brother became deaf around the age of four or so (before I was born). He went to school over there. They might be able to point you in the right direction.
I only remember a few things (mostly funny signs and bad words or things to call people)
Instead of attending a place with that many people, maybe you could contact someone teaching these adult only classes and ask if they do side work and will come to your house. Take an add out on Craigslist as well.
All they recommend is the local community college courses, which do not allow small children. As far as we can tell, the thinking seems to be: Deaf Child - put in special school, Deaf Adult - take college courses and teach your own damn kids.
woodland school in Marysville on range road. they have small class sizes and if I remember right it started around 5:00pm. my son starts school in flint this year, he's excited cause marine city schools were a joke
We live in Marine City! Is there any program here at all? I didn't even think about woodland, although they would be more of a daytime thing I think. We would be more of a evenings/weekend group.
As for the other suggestions guys, thank you and keep them coming! I'll be looking into them!
This really does mean alot to me. I also have a totally deaf friend that I mostly communicate with in a sort of schrades type of improvised sign language. I really feel I (and all of us in our family) need to learn this!
There's a guy on here with a yellow mud buggy that is deaf, I forget his username, but he lives between flint and Davison.(EDIT: Blazin79)
maybe if you trade him offroad parts he'll teach you haha. I tried to remember some stuff but it was easier to do random hand signals and write on paper.

it's an evening class after the school lets out. it was a good basic starter class, start with letters & counting then moved onto words.
there's nothing around really except for baker college
