Basically any mods made to this trailer will have to be bolt-on, as I do not want to destroy this trailer in any way. It is in VERY good condition for a M416 as usually they are cut or destroyed in some way, whether it be a crunched floor or sides, or missing parts. Mine is only missing the lunette and blackout lights.
The first thing after the top bows and tarp it will be receiving is a kayak rack, but I plan on making a cross bar system capable of holding a trailer top tent of some sort. I do not want to spend $1k so I may make my own out of canvas and a hard roof of some kind.
Here are the initial pictures...
I forgot to take pics of the top bows, but they are PVC and I got the Idea from Boyink.
Here are the pics of the canvas top though.
What the bows look like... The Bantam is Boyinks'
I actually like the look of the domed canvas, I wonder if I could fiberglass over the canvas to make a lid in some way?
It looks freaking great. I've been toying with the idea of selling my teardrop for a while now, and now I'm thinking about building my 416. lol It just looks so cool. The whole reason why I want to sell my teardrop though is because I want to be able to stand up inside, which this wouldn't solve. I have some tent shelters for the side of my tear as well, but find I don't set them up for those over night stops that I usually do.
Anyway, take it out and post some photos of your actually using it.
Thats a nice campground. The only bad thing about it is it's so close to High Rock I'd rather pass by it. If you aren't familiar with High Rock, go east on the main road past the camp ground and basically stay straight until you run into Lake Superior. It's a flat open area that forms the point of the pennisula out there. Awesome place and would be great for your trailer!
Either way, glad your enjoying it. I'm assuming it's been on some trails by now. Hows it pulling?
We were mostly scouting this trip as I have not got a portable toilet yet. To my wife that is a MUST.
I went down that road a couple years ago and ran into someone who said there was nothing there and it just looped back around to CH. Based on what you said we went out there and wheeled the H3 all day long LOL. The road was in rough shape, and some places were really narrow. Especially compared to wheeling a flatty. The H3 got compared to an air conditioned tank and one point.
Someone removed the sign to High Rock, so we actually passed it by miles and went to Hore Lake - that was absolutely gorgeous, had a place you could camp, and a awesome sand bottom lake. We eventually found High Rock, and it was beautiful.
I was just happy to make it home alive... my wife was about to kill me because I was wheeling her truck, and wheeling like I wheel my jeeps. I am pretty sure we jumped it at one point :teehee:
I love the UP and look forward to exploring it even more as my son gets older. It was a good time to build the trailer as it gives me time to work out the quirks. It had remarkably few. The lift is the only thing I really want to explore what else I could do.
Here are some pictures and video from today, it is not permanently wired but it works very well! Just have to pop them back off to paint the brackets and where we had to grind. Hope to have it wired this week.
A couple more pictures, the switch for the lift is not what I wanted, or really where I wanted it, but it was the only real place I could put it. If I find a metal one that will do what I want I will replace it. I ordered the actual switch for the actuators, but it was flimsy and less weatherproof than this one. This one was purchased in a pinch locally.
Now to remove the actuators so I can paint the brackets they are attached to and the welds.
Thanks! As far as losing the H3, the only way that would happen is if we got an H3 Alpha, or an H1. Definitely would not replace it with a 10 year older vehicle with more issues and miles. I've got 2 other jeeps to empty my pockets!
I added some LED lighting inside the tent that is ran off the 12V battery on the tongue. There are a couple welds that I want to go over now that I have a 220v welder as well. Overall it has held up great, we did not get to take it to the UP this year though due to buying a house and moving, but we did use it at the family property up near Tawas.
I have found I need to add some braces on the rear shelves that support the stabilizers as well. With the trailer loaded the rear shelves flex enough that they can't level the trailer, just stabilize it.
Now I don't have to hang a battery lantern inside. Trying to figure out where to put the others. I did put one on the bottom side of the tent to light up the lower room and ladder at night.

slick. if the utility trailer I'm getting from my grandpa is long enough after I put the bed on it, I want to put a decent sized toolbox in the front, and wire it for extra bed lighting and whatnot... and put a pickup camper in it if I want to keep my truck bed for other stuff :teehee:
I believe this just needs glued, the limit switch appears to be working again on this actuator.
This actuator was stuck, I tore it apart and it appears to work now. This grease sucks, and I am pretty sure it is a big part of the reason the actuators won't work in winter. Does anyone have any grease suggestions?
Edit: Dammit this one keeps conking out, sometimes it is working sometimes it isn't.
Added some needed bracing, replaced two actuators under warranty, cleaned up some wiring
