I have a 83 toyota , the rear just started leaking outta the pinion , i was just wondering if there is a seal there, or is it the bearing that does the sealing? Also can i just take the 4 bolts off the backing plate and take off the brake lines and just pull the axles, then take out the pig for it to be rebuilt. I called the dealer and they seem to think that you can put a new seal in and not pull the rear end, but how would you set backlash, and check the tooth pattern ?????? thanks!!!
correct on pulling the axles...there is a crush sleeve in there...I would buy the solid sleeve before I pulled it apart...I personally would pull the 3rd and check pattern, replace seal and sleeve, check pattern.....alot of good reading here to help you out http://gearinstalls.com/
people put way too much thought into replacing pinion seals...the crush sleeve is work hardened by now, nothing will change. Remove the pinion, change the seal, retorque the pinion nut, done. Replaced many, many pinion seals, and never had a single problem.
Yea thats what ive heard from the marlin crawler forum, just pull the nut replace the seal and retighten , call it a day . thanks guys
