At what age have you started kids on a bike?
My son is only 15 months now but is extremely interested in my dirtbike, jeep, lawn mower and anything he can go for a ride on. He likes the bike the most, and will go for rides until I stop. I was just wondering how soon others have gotten there kids to ride alone on a bike.
I'd like to get him on a crf50 with training wheels next summer/fall. He would be 2 1/2. Am I dreaming by thinking this would be possible?
I'm very familiar with bikes and would definitely have a limiter on the throttle.
And ya that's part of the plan, get him going as soon as possible, we both will benefit from it. I think it would be hard for the wife to tell me no if he goes with me.
I gave Charlie his pw50 when he turned 4. He was all about it at first. He hasn't had much interest lately though. He is still on training wheels and lost interest the first time he dumped it when he asked me to take them off.
I just let him turn it on when he wants and am letting him get used to it at his own pace. I have a feeling when his brother hops on it next summer and schools him they will both be off to the races. Alex will be 3 in november.
Weird, that's my name and the same age I got my first bike, a jr50...that was 34yrs ago...however I never lost interest in them...I took a few yrs off from riding here and there but I have never been without a bike in the last 34yrs, however I did take a 20yr break from dirtbikes, but I'm back now and couldn't be happier
My dad started me out on my old Honda trail70 when I was about that age. He bulit some training wheels for it as I couldn't hold it up on my own. By the time I was 5 the training wheels had been removed. At 11 I decided when he wasn't home I could take out his IT 465 and ended up with a broken arm lol.
I bet I am a lot younger than you..but my first bike was a trail 70 as well.i rode the snot out of it to the point where light brackets fell off while I was riding. :teehee: Whenever you decide to let him ride, Levi, you won't have any trouble finding a bike. You and your deal finding will keep him supplied with bikes forever.
Both of mine were on TTR 50s once they were good enough on their pedal bike. i am not a fan of training wheels and neither of mine had them. I've seen the results of training wheels go both ways and it's really about the kid and their supervision/encouragement. Some did training wheels and then didn't ride and some did ride after. Same for starting without training wheels.
Mine were riding at 3 and 5.
Most kids don't get throttle control/braking until 4/5 so even if you start them sooner, it doesn't make them "better" sooner. Since we almost exclusively woods ride (vs track or open field), I made them wait more to ensure they had that control (or learned it quicker).
Kids can ride quads and dirtbikes at ANY age, just not at an ORV park or state land until they take the training course. Technically a dirtbike or quad can't legally be driven across most roads anyway (except in some counties where it's legal to drive ORVs on public roads).
Started my son on a 50cc chinese pitbike when he was 4. He was still on training wheels on his bicycle, but I didn't put training wheels on the dirtbike. 1 day of crashes, ground mostly except when the bike bounced off a tree at about 10mph, after that he was good to go and no more crashes. Now he's 10 and I just got rid of the pit bike and want to get him used to at least a shifter and hopefully a clutch as well. I am thinking a KX100 or ttr125.

ttr125 or something along those lines may be your best bet. Did you mean a klx 110 by any chance? that would probably be closer to the ttr. I have a good friend that started riding bikes about the same time I did(10 or so) and he started on a kx100. It was a bigger bike than we were all used to. He outgrew it and then went to a crf450x.
My 7 year old girl currently rides a Chinese 110cc ATV every chance she gets. I built a track in the back yard for all my girls. They all started with a 50cc at about 4-5 years old. They all ride but only the 7 year old bugs me to ride all the time. The other two 4 and 9 would prefer to watch or ride with me. The 4 year old is starting to have a interest so the 50cc might get fired up in the spring.
Be careful just because they have a desire to ride with you does not always mean they can handle riding alone. Even with the throttle limiter they still have to steer and stop. A remote stop works good but you end up chasing them around to start it again.
I know from experience with my oldest. I feel like I rushed it. I thought she was doing good and was all set. Next thing I know she got hurt(not serious at all) but it kept her from wanting to ride again. Now it's just not something she is interested in. She will for a lap around or two but I can tell she isn't having as much fun more just to show her younger sister or me she can do it too.
My opinion is to just enjoy riding around with him and see how he does on his own non powered toys or power wheels type things and go from there and when he has steering and stopping down go for it. It is a lot of fun just sitting back and watching them enjoy the ride when you don't have to stress about them as much.
I rode a Yamaha PW80 before I could touch the ground on the sides, when I wanted to stop I had to flag down my dad to catch the bike lol. Unsure what age that was.
It's crazy how fast they grow up. Before you know it, he'll be getting busted for not having bumpers on his jeeps!
