I have 6.72 I shouldn't have a problem. There are more variables than just axle gears. What trans, what t case, doubler, all that makes a huge difference.
It also would depend on what the intended use is going to be, for mud and sand 5.38 gears and a t-case with a 2.76:1 low will give you decent usable power. Keep in mind that 44" tires create massive rolling resistance especially in mud or sand. If you require wheel speed for your application you might need more HP since a small block will struggle in high range with that large a tire in pretty much any off road terrain. If you're into rocks and technical wheeling where high wheel speed isn't necessary a doubler should be on your list of future purchases.
I run 42's / 5.13 gears, an np205 (1.96 low) with a slightly built (350-400hp) big block and there are times that I could use lower gearing.
Thanks for replys, not really sure on hp numbers but just looking at gear options, trucks going to be just mud truck and maybe dunes, but also been considering big block, just a project and tossing ideas around.
