Self tapping bolts vs. drill and tap?

Hey guys.
I am going to be building a transfer case skid for my zj. I plan to copy this design http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f37/zj-transfer-case-skid-plate-build-754151/

However I can not find any self tapping 3/8 bolts in my area and was wondering if just tapping would work. I know it basically the same thing but with the thin metal of the uni body would the tap do a good enough job to get the bolt in afterwards?
Thanks.

Any time I have used self taping bolts you can never get them really tight as they will just strip. I would not want to trust those to hold up all that weight.......weld a nut to plate steel, drill hold in the unibody frame , than weld that plate to the unibody and it will hold the skid.
