There's nothing mechanical or hydraulic at all about the non-piston side of the Ford D60 dual-piston caliper - it just holds the other pad. AZ only sells the piston side (according to their site) and the two halves just bolt together, so AutoZone doesn't have to pay for all that extra weight to be shipped back from China or whatever.
Its cheaper to do it that way, but she didn't know that she was only gettting half a caliper back when she actually turned in the whole caliper for core. The AZ employee should have said something when he saw that she was turning in the entire assembly, so he's either a douchebag or just stupid.
NAPA sells the caliper both ways depending on how you want to turn it in. The calipers I got from Carquest a few weeks back (same ones) also came complete with both halves.
