for a bumper the thinnest material I would use is 3/16" wall. I am just about done with my new front bumper build. it is 2x4x3/16" tubing, the frame mounts are made from 6x6x1/2" angle, with weld thru clevis mounts and a 2" receiver hitch. the only thing I have left is to finish weld it at a buddies shop on his welder. I tacked everything into position at home with my 110v welder but on something that will get a good deal of force applied it should be done with a 220v machine. if you can I would go right with a 220v welder. don't know about hobarts but lots of people like them. I was recently looking at the Lincoln 185.
