I know the factory ties them down by the frame on the train cars. But for a lifted truck I like going to the axles. I dont like the ideal of the straps getting shock loaded going over bumps.
I also use the criss cross method on the rear of my truck. I would cross the front too but with the tool box on my trailer I cant.
Same with on a ship, they use tie downs to the frame. But, the motions that those things see on a train isn't as severe as bouncing a set of railroad tracks that can suddenly put all kinds of slack in straps when the suspension bounces 5 inches.
