I don't think I have never heard the "same diety" theory.
Jesus asked the Father in heaven to forgive them. While God the son (Jesus), Father God, and God the Spirit are all one, they fulfill different roles. Jesus left the right hand of God to dwell among us, and it was the will of the Father he was obeying to die, even death on a cross. Kinda mysterious, but it works inside the trinity somehow.
