Good point...although it looks like the end of the pinion has wear on it...might be gear lube though. Can't tell.

When you were doing your seal, could you move the pinion around before you pulled the bolt off? Can you now? That much won't need to do any backlash measurement...just grab the pinion yolk and see of it chucks in and out.
