slightly smaller ring gear, c-clip axles, axle housing has press in tubes that have a tendency to break the plug welds and spin, the 9" is a third member design , versus the carrier design of the 8.8. The 9" has more parts availability and can be super built up while the 8.8 has limited upgrade options (good amount of gears and lockers though). Superior now offers a super 8.8 kit that gives you stronger shafts (still 31 spline) and gets rid of the c-clips. Overall, the 8.8 is a very strong axle, one that should be able to handle 36-37" tires on a light rig.
