Default Taurus cooling question

My Moms 02 Taurus is overheating. I know its not the thermostat. When it overheats it leaks out of what look like a heater valve, which is right by the heater core. It only leaks when it overheats though. Basically what i want to know is could a bad water pump cause it to leak out of that when it overheats. Any other suggestion will help.
