So, just how many years have to pass before slavery is behind us?
I'm pretty confident that there are no surviving slaves or slave owners.
The government that allowed slavery was destroyed over 140 years ago. btw, under this government, only approximately 3% of the population owned slaves.
We've spent 40+ years providing everyone that looks like they could've been a slave with preferential treatment as far as access to education and other benefits.
Where does it all end? We can never legislate that people have to like one another. Attempts to use preferential treatment to attone for past sins just provides more fuel for the haters, since I'll offer that the vast majority of racism today is driven by the (accurate) perception that one group is being favored over another.
