The 8.8 is bigger in almost every dimension than a d44. That said I have had both and broken neither.
Currently running a 62" wide 44 with a welded stock carrier, 5.38's and stock shafts. I think I have about $150 into my disc brakes including new calipers, discs, pads, caliper mounts, and hoses. A lot bigger brakes than an 8.8. though. Running 36" SX's with no breakage yet.
I even had the rear lockup at 40 MPH because of oil starvation (my fault) with no shaft or gear set breakage.
