8.8 is stronger and already has disc brakes on it. I think it would be cheaper than the 44 with discs. The 8.8 limit slip is pretty pussy though so you might still want to put in a locker of some sort. If you do ever want to put an lunchbox in it, make sure the 8.8 is open because you can't put a lunchbox in the limited carrier. My 8.8 cost me $550 to get under my jeep and then I put an aussie in it for $289. So a bit over $800. You'd probably spent 100 already for the 44 plus the disc brake kit $400, plus bits and pieces (brake line, perches, shock mounts) to install it $100. then the same $289 to lunchbox it. So maybe it would be about the same but you'd still end up with a less strong axle. In my opinion, the only downside to the 8.8 that can't easily be fixed is that it is heavy and has a tendency to catch shit because it's got a fat lower lip.
