http://www.steepandcheap.com/ has been selling good hiking socks over the past few days. Half price. Just stick with primarily wool, and choose the thickness based on the time of year you're going.

I picked up a couple of pair of these this week on SAC for under 10 bucks. I also like shorter ankle socks in the summer if I'm using light hiking shoes rather than boots. Just depends on your preference.
