I know more than I care to know about shoes. Asics makes their shoes with a specific foot type in mind. They take into consideration arch height, instep height, pronation, supination, etc. your best bet is to visit a running shoe store and have them analyze your feet before you invest in a pair of running shoes.
I have high arches and have had to wear inserts in my shoes since 5th grade, and I don't need them when I wear my asics.
Athletic shoes are designed to last for roughly 500 miles of walking/running for a person with average weight and height.
