Scout Axle Upgrade Questions
I have a '75 IH Scout and I'm at the point where I need to upgrade my axles, and I would like your opinion on what route to take.
Fresh 345 V8
T18 trans (6.32 1st gear)
Dana 20 t-case (2:1)
Dana 44 front and rear w/ 3.54 gears
Spartan locker rear, open front
35" BFG MT old style
The plan is for this to be a trail rig only.
Front axle needs shafts and u-joints.
Need more gearing.
Want locked front and rear
Lack of money
So here are the options I'm looking at for upgrades:
Question 1: Do I upgrade to Dana 44 alloy shafts or Dana 60's with stock shafts? 44 would require me to get 1 more locker, 60 would require 2. I figure the price is about the same for 44 shafts or Dana 60's. 60 would also require me to buy new rims, and maybe new tires. 60's would require suspension modifications.
Question 2: Do I regear the axles to 5:13 or go tera low in the transfer case? it would be roughly the same gain in ratio. The transfer case could use a rebuild anyways. Cost is double for t-case upgrade.
