In all fairness, he probably realized I'm a gearhead, not a people person and that with my isolated upbringing, I would have had a difficult time understanding crazy or chemically impaired people and it would affect my outlook on life negatively.
As far as my Dad, he's blind in one eye, doesn't see real well out of the other. He signed up for the Army and basically convinced them to let him in anyway. Yes, he may be a little sour based on what he saw while building roads in rice patties but I trust his judgment.
I suppose it was a different time back then compared to the early 90's; many of the guys he served with may have been drafted so that could explain what he saw.
