Small displacement isn't the only factor for milage. I have a Suzuki Swift GT that puts out ~150hp from a 79cid (1.3L)engine. This thing wouldn't get 13mpg on a good day and it only weighs 1650 pounds. The motor has just been too modified to be efficient. As far as the Durango motor, the AWD is a factor especially in city traffic with lots of tight turns. I would think the milage would be better at highway speeds when the viscouse clutch in the t-case isn't loading the drivline. You may want to look into the aftermarket programmers for your vehicle and see if any offer anything for improved mileage.
