Default 1979 doge 360 gas in the oil

Just purchased a truck from Arizona that was supposed to have a seized engine.
Truck has Edelbrock carb and intake.
Starting looking at it and the crankcase was filled with gas/oil. about 10quarts total
Drained out the mixture and filled with fresh oil.
Disconnected the mechancical fuel pump and ran an electric into a can of gas.
truck fires up and runs great so far.
Electric fuel pump will push fuel past floats and flood engine, so we just ran the pump intermittently.
Question:
Why or how would crankcase fill with gas?
Would bad manual pump leak into crankcase?
Could fuel siphon into carb and drain tank if floats were sticking?
