I've been guilty of it before when I had my diesel. I never did it to impress anybody or because I thought they'd like it, I was usually either away from other drivers, trying to piss someone off who was being a dick, or messing with a friend driving behind or next to me. There were times I accidently smoked people out in traffic, but I tried not to be a dick about it when it could be helped. With the tune on the truck sometimes the throttle/RPM would just be at that point to lug it down(heavy throttle and low RPM/boost) and it'd get smokey. It happens.
