They can be good cars for sure, I just had bad luck with mine, especially my early model one. In all fairness, the '07 was a good reliable car and got fantastic gas mileage. I just happened to have some issues that I don't think should have come up at 76k miles. I do see quite a few of them with high mileage around, as do I see Subarus with 2.5l, but it is worth looking into the head gasket thing because that's a real issue if he's not up for replacing the gasket himself. But Subarus are great cars outside of that issue. ddeadserious on here has a late 90's model with the 2.2l with 183k and he's hardly replaced anything. Rear wheels bearings and struts are about it, he loves it. Goes through snow very well too.
