I just put my mother in an assisted living facility. It is not a nursing home, and no medical services are provided.
They do not provide CPR (a medical service). I understand this fully; her level of understanding varies with her dementia. She likewise has a Living Will with a DNR.
I would not expect anyone to attempt CPR if it was necessary. I also understand the facility would call 911 if something occurred, and the staff is aware of the DNR and has a copy on file. Their process would be to contact 911 and myself - I would remind them of the DNR and would do likewise with the 911 responders.
Working with the elderly and terminally ill is a different situation. The family obviously understands that, and the media is attempting to boost ratings by sensationalizing a 911 call presented out of context - like they did with Rodney King.
This is the Pub. Leave common sense at the door.
