Not trying to defend this move because it is NASCAR, but what makes this any more of a "gamble" than any of the other companies that sponsor races, air commercials during races, sponsor vehicles, etc?? NRA is a big business and they pay people lots of money to determine where they should advertise and how they spend money. I am glad they are being pro active and advertising. Rumor has it that advertising actually works.
