I'm suprised your car doesn't have a low range. I had a 1980something DL wagon that had a low range, axle interlock (true 4x4) and something called a hill holder. The hill holder was sorta cool. If you stopped on an incline, the brakes would stay applied until you released the cluth. Yes, you could take your foot right off the brake pedel on a steep incline and the car would just sit there.
Some Brat's, DL's, and GL's had the dual range setup, unfortunately Subaru never put one in the loyale. However, if i can find one of those transmissions, they bolt up to my setup with no issues, that's another thing Ive got on my list of stuff i want to do. That hill holder thing would be sweet! i do a lot of trail riding and occasionally up to silver lake so that'd def come in hand for me.
