I don't see anything about him being on TV. Whether a felony drug conviction 20 years ago should disallow from owning guns today is a whole other debate.
Based on what I read in that article it sounds like the police handled it correctly. I'd much rather they go through the expense of overkill than have police officers killed because they went in unprepared.
