That having been said... If you avoid the typical EBD pitfall of letting them get fat because "it's cute" you will drastically reduce the potential breathing/hip/joint problems that plague the breed.
Its not necessarily the money up front that worries me it is, like you said, the extra costs associated with them. If you end up with a lemon(which can happen with any breed) it can be devastating to be in the situation where you spend thousands on vet bills or put the dog down. My current dog was free and hasn't been to the vet in about 5 years and is the healthiest 9 year old dog you have ever seen.
